Nowadays,
Smartphones are more than just a superior piece of hardware, the
applications and User Interface makes the biggest difference. Mobile
manufacturers are facing strong competition and increasingly new
concerns and new technologies make their toll. To cope with it, they are
coming with innovations, App Store.
Apple and Nokia are the two main competitors in App Store market. Both are offering more than millions of applications for your mobile phones. However, there are several points that differ both from one another.
Apple Store
Apple began its application store on the request of developers who want to create applications for iOS devices, as a step for innovation. This App Store became so much popular within a year of launch; around one billion of applications were downloaded. You can download applications from App Store for either free or at a cost. It is the only way to download directly native applications for your iPad, iPod Touch or iPhone without voiding the warranty.
Until May 2009, Apple was the only vendor to have an App Store for its iOS devices. However now, Nokia has ventured into the App Store market to give a strong competition to the others.
Nokia Ovi Store
The Nokia announced Ovi Store in May 2009 at the Mobile World Congress. The Ovi Store blends Nokia’s services into a one-stop-shop for paid and free content. Ovi Store offers several services, including Ovi Maps, N-Gage Gaming Services, Ovi App Store and Ovi Music Store. With Ovi, Nokia pushes the vision ahead of its wider range of mobile services. There are more than 90 million store downloads per month.
Comparison between the App Stores
Both manufacturer, Nokia and Apple, offers a 70% revenue share to application developers. Apple started its application store on developers and public request to develop products for the iOS devices, while the Nokia’s venture is solely its own decision. The idea behind App Store is to potentially push the sales of Smartphones and cellphones, and to stream revenue into the company with a share of application sale prices.
With Apple’s App Store, users often get confused, as they have to spot the relevant applications from the sea of junk. However, Nokia had worked hard on its Ovi Store and deployed a higher degree of relevancy in its search options. Moreover, they have also customized Ovi Store. It only shows applications that are compatible with your device.
In Ovi Store, there are several options available for the payments, whereas there are only few payment methods in Apple Store. Moreover, the downloaded applications from the Ovi Store can be used for more than one model, while Apple applications are developed for only one handsets. With Ovi Store you can also share your downloaded applications with your friends.
However, Apple has already set a milestone in the market and Nokia still has to prove its worth in this field. Both, Apple and Nokia are the leading companies in mobile industries, but strategy and appeal are different. The success ratio will be defined with the novelty and approach.
